Next Show at Kenton Club

Oh yeah I made this for our show at Burgerville!

bottom of the totem pole

In November of 2009 I finely got sick of not having a real job, the Job that I had since i moved to Portland Or, 3 falls ago has been with this really great company that basically is an events service for concert. I've gotten to work some real cool gigs and some really silly ones, the work is hard but there is also a lot of down time as well so you could have a 12 hour day and it wouldn't even faze you. the only problem with the job is that the work is not consistent and there would be months where I'd be lucky to get two full work days and be able to pay my rent. Lucky for me I was living with Kirsten and she helped me out a lot. At that point i was over it and and the last summer did not look to promising so i went to work for my soon to be in laws up in Washington. That worked out fine and paid our way through the summer and helped us in our move to a new place, besides all the money we got from our wedding!
So its August, I've been working concerts and making it by but i new winter was approaching really soon so after we went to Massachusetts to see my sisters wedding I got to work looking for a job. I printed a bunch of resumes and got 2 interviews in one day and got both jobs! I took the wine delivery job over the record store job because it would be more permanent and I'd have a job after Christmas.
The wine delivery job is really cool, I love it. The hours are hard, i have to be there at 5am most days, sometimes i can come in at 6am and sometimes i need to be there around 430am, and on that day I'm going to Bend Or, which is 3hours away from Portland, I usually get back to town between 5pm and 6pm.
I started the job two weeks be for Thanksgiving, right be for the busiest time of the year. I was working every day (i was only hired for part time) for more than 8 hours and making a lot more money then I have been making since a few weeks up in Wa. This kept up until February and then I lost Tuesdays. That was OK, i needed another day off, I was starting to get tired and bummed out about life, its hard to keep up a social life when you have to be in bed by 9pm. So I embraced this and took the pay cut well, I was still going to Seattle on Monday which made for a 8 to 9 hour day, and I was still going to Bend, 12 hour day. I was still making it.
In the last few months the owner, the top dog, the big cheese, called my boss and was wondering why I've been getting as many hours as the full time dudes. He told my boss to cut my hours and make the other dudes do what i was doing, so OK thats cool, now I had Monday and Tuesday off, sweet, less money, but more me time!
Last month it got crazier the dudes at the top where not happy with the Wine Salesman that works the Oregon Coast and fired him. For me that means that there is one less run, that means one less dude has to work on Wednesday that means ME! ugh! I've been getting this call the day be for too, so I'm usually anticipating waking up early and having a long drive to Bend and when I get the call I'm relieved but also really bummed. I mean my wife and i have a budget that only works if i make my quota every month so when I tell her I know it's just going to be a pain in our asses.
So, yeah low man on the totem pole, I get the table scraps. When it gets to busy I get the long hard routes, but when it isn't I get the simple short days. Oh well, i hope that the Coast run comes back and I get to work next Wednesday and keep up with our budget. May be I'll have a chance to work a concert or two this month! We'll see!

post burgerville show

So the Burgerville show was off the hook, we played ok but sounded great! There we a lot of people there to see us and to see the other bands. I'm really excited about the friends of mine that did make it out and I know now who matters. I'm still really disappointed in my old "friends" who didn't show up, but at this moment i'm content with leaving it at that.
I also made a call about the band that did not get to play and found out that they are not upset with me our our band, so i don't have to worry about that any more. It's crazy how much things get to your head some times and that talking to people makes it better. I'm really lucky to have that with my wife.
So back to burgerville, today we had a practice a 2pm to get our shit together for the show later. We jammed last Friday and came up with a set of stuff we wanted to do for our show today. We started with a heavy stoned out noiser jam that was pretty wild and fun this song featured Jose making feed back loops and eventually playing drums standing with the bass drum on its side. Travis rocked his crazy "joy division" guitar and his crazy moog, this made for excellent moog jams and hot guitar solos! Luke rocked his same set up but with an extra sampler and it was so good!!!! I rocked some vocals with with a wah peddle and my dl4 digital peddle and eventually rocked the bass guitar by the end of my set. So the noise set went into the surf punk jam and i sang some cramps style vocals with lots of fx's which was a lot of fun! After that song it got crazy as we tried to do a hip hop part that seems to only work when I'm drunk and we are not so loud.
At the end of our attempted at a hip hop jam we stopped abruptly and the crowd went wild to my surprise after that we went into a set of our standards were i pay bass and do some vocals it was rocked. Travis also brought out his guitar for these songs and it brought a whole different element the songs that we have been playing since we started this band. I should mention befor the end of reviewing my own band is that we decided that it would be awesome to have two Star Wars movies playing at the same time, A New Hope, and Empire Strikes Back, the best part of having these two fine movies playing at the same time was that be for we went on I let them play at top volume. I feel like the audience really liked this but it was really hard to hear both TVs except when there would be lasers blasting, r2dt, Chewbaca, and sometimes some winy Luke!
After we finished playing a lot of people came up and were really happy with what they heard. The members of Eternal Tapestry really enjoyed it and told us a few times. Jeffery J was also really into it which made me really happy cause I was really excited to see them play. As soon as we got out of the way E Tap set up, with two SG gibsons, pedals, and sweet amps. They are also rolling with a bass player and sax man who filled it in really well. The drummer of the band is amazing as well, you always know a good drummer when they know how to hold back and not get to fancy right away, a good drummer and make really simple sound really good and complement the melo drone of the 4 dudes standing there making sweet love with the air between them and the crowd of people looking on wile the set a mood that you know will end up rocking your socks off and it did!
I have yet to have the chance to really enjoy the mighty soundz of Jeffery Jerusalem until tonight. JJ did the honers of play last, this is a spot that could be good and bad at times, today i felt like it didn't work out for him, there were a lot of people who left after seeing E Tap, the rumor was that they had to get home for LOST, how funny is that, but man did they miss a good set. I'm glad i finally got to see him in a well lit room, every other chance has been in a house were i could not even see what he was doing or make it through the hoards of what i think a college freshmen to even be able to enjoy what i saw tonight. Pure excellence! JJ does what i'd call electro pop music, that may sound cheesy but he didn't. The thing i liked the best was his performance aspect, I could believe that it would be hard to stand on stage alone and sing with beats going off behind you, but that was not his style, Jeff plyed the keys and percussion to most of the songs that he played tonight and also had some slight crafty dance parts going on.
All and all, i feel really good about this show. I wish that i was not the only one reviwing it cause i'm sure there would be others who could write it up way better than this. If i ever had a dream show come true this one was it! thanks to all who came, and the staff that worked that night!

show at b ville: my life

http://home.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=user

today my band has a show at Burgerville, the one we are playing at is in South East Portland Oregon, its on hip street called Hawthorn that has a lot of restaurants and interesting shop. Playing here will be one of the most fun, weird, and interesting shows that we have played yet. We are playing with two other acts, they both are very popular and have "scene cred." I'd like to think we do too, not as a band but as our own separate entity's, all of our members have been doing some sort of music in this town for a wile including Travis of Please step out of the Vehicle, and Jose who is in Jizz Wisard, Batmen (formally Ganglionn), Luke of a Noise outfit that went by a few different names, and me, with my slacked rock band Holy (holy) Smokes, who is currently on 'hiatus" but who only plan on "playing" "one" more show. All the quotes mean is that I'll believe it when i see it! Back to the show tonight, Luke has been the master mind of setting it up and he took a total different approach to setting it up than I ever have, he just asked everyone that we are online friends with if they'd play the show... so we got a lot of yeses and nos and after we got 2 the show was booked and solid. We are very happy with the line up, i made a cool flier for it as scene on our profile page. A few days later we got a few more responses from bands saying they could play and we had to turn them down, which is no big deal if the band checks their mail every day, but when they don't and post they they are playing the show on their page shit gets sketchy. So as the responsible one tries to set in motion a way to let them know that they are not playing.... this is hard because i do not have their phone numbers nor do I try to hang out at their house to much (dekum manor diy venue in town) so i was at a loss. I mentioned it to one of their friends and asked Jose (who does go there a lot) to tell them. None of this worked out. It turns out that none of this worked out and they ended up calling Jose who directed then to Luke who told them that they were in fact not on the show, no this were i;m freaked out cause i think its all my fault and that that band is now pissed at me and that they think it was just because "I didn't want them on that show" which is not true, it was just a full bill. So there is the drama.
So the reason I bring that up is because I'v been dealing with my own psychosis (i believe would be the right term for it) that has been killing me the last few months. I believe that most people hate and can't stand me, or just look at me and just say "fuck that dude." i also believe that when I do meet some one new, they ask people about me and they get the a mouthful of how much I suck and to stay away from me cause "I'm a fucked up perv" or some shit like that. this all started a wile ago when people started telling my wife not to get married to me cause I'm just bad and she does not need that, this led to us finding out a lot about our "friends" we founf out who really likes me and who wishes I were not around. At this time i was living with a bunch Kirsten (wife) and a bunch of dudes i was tight with and i didn't feel alone at all, I didn't feel abandon at all, i was really bummed and had to talk to a lot of people about what was going on but it all seemed to work out.
In July we moved out of that house and moved to a different part of town that's about 15min away. This is when i realized that i was way to "far" away and that i didn't matter any more, I wasn't available, I didn't have a place for shows, and i didn't have a band. I started hitting up the local bar and meeting a bunch of new people that seemed really cool and i was excited again, but it didn't take too long for the rumors to spread about me and i was soon outed again. This keeps on happening to be and I can't figure it out, I just feel like i'm just not very likable, which i think is weird cause I try to be the nicest person i can be. I mean I'm not sure If its all in my head or if people do hate me. Other evidence of people hating me or note caring at all is that ever since i'v had this new band a lot of the people that i thought were my "friends" have not shown up to any of them. These are people that will go see one band every week no matter what, so it's not like they are the kind of people that don't like to go out.
Another blow to my ego was when i moved on from the DIY house show scene and then to the local bar scene i started hanging out with my roommates ex-boyfriend (we started a band) who was still around a lot, we had a lot in common that i'm not going to get into in this blog, and i'm kind of leaving that part out on purpose cause it's a longer story than this. So dude and i would got out a lot to hang out and meet people and bullshit. There was one night that we met a few really cute girls and i totally was really into one of them and he was totally into the other so it was fun we carried on all night and that was that. The next day dude tells me he got the number from the girl he was talking to of the girl i was talking to, no big deal. So after a wile we were both spending time with this girl separately, then all of the sudden our band practices were getting weird and i was told it was because I had to many big dreams about the band that he did not feel the same about it. So this may have been the way it was, we played one show and the band was over, never talk about it, it was just over. I learned later that the dude and girl got heaver and having a "silly band" was not in his cards any more. "new job, new band, and new girlfriend." The funny thing is that at the same time girl started getting weird with me and started avoiding me by making pans with me and telling me at the last minute that she had to do something else. It turns out she just didn't want to hang out any more and that i was an "asshole" for being mad about being blown off. Hmmmm. Now these two don't hang out with me at all. More evidence that i suck.
So here I am its a few hours be for our show, I'm listening to a mix cd that Luke made for me and i'm loving it. Luke is now one of my best friend (i'll probably fuck that up somehow) and i've been hanging out with him a lot. But I still can't get over the idea that none of my old friends who i have texted about the show will show up and it totally bums me out. Now a lot people say to me "fuck them, who cares, stop winning, and all that shit" but i can't help it. So Luke is going to pick me up in a few, I've got to get ready. I plan on writing about how this all worked out so we'll see.

Summer in march

Today, yesterday, the day be for. have been so nice! of course that means that our crazy 1/2 neighbor has been out side trying to talk to me about trying to use our driveway. this guy is already living in our neighbors driveway between our houses, yells a lot, talks to him self and is just a public nuisance. any way he wanted to use part of our drive way to work on a car, judging by how much room he uses right now and how he is still not out of our hood we said no, we want to use the space to make raised beds any way, after telling him we are using that space he asked me if there where any complaints about him being there and i told him it was just weird that he was there... i can't wait till he is gone, he is bad energy and upsets the balance of our lives!
