In November of 2009 I finely got sick of not having a real job, the Job that I had since i moved to Portland Or, 3 falls ago has been with this really great company that basically is an events service for concert. I've gotten to work some real cool gigs and some really silly ones, the work is hard but there is also a lot of down time as well so you could have a 12 hour day and it wouldn't even faze you. the only problem with the job is that the work is not consistent and there would be months where I'd be lucky to get two full work days and be able to pay my rent. Lucky for me I was living with Kirsten and she helped me out a lot. At that point i was over it and and the last summer did not look to promising so i went to work for my soon to be in laws up in Washington. That worked out fine and paid our way through the summer and helped us in our move to a new place, besides all the money we got from our wedding!
So its August, I've been working concerts and making it by but i new winter was approaching really soon so after we went to Massachusetts to see my sisters wedding I got to work looking for a job. I printed a bunch of resumes and got 2 interviews in one day and got both jobs! I took the wine delivery job over the record store job because it would be more permanent and I'd have a job after Christmas.
The wine delivery job is really cool, I love it. The hours are hard, i have to be there at 5am most days, sometimes i can come in at 6am and sometimes i need to be there around 430am, and on that day I'm going to Bend Or, which is 3hours away from Portland, I usually get back to town between 5pm and 6pm.
I started the job two weeks be for Thanksgiving, right be for the busiest time of the year. I was working every day (i was only hired for part time) for more than 8 hours and making a lot more money then I have been making since a few weeks up in Wa. This kept up until February and then I lost Tuesdays. That was OK, i needed another day off, I was starting to get tired and bummed out about life, its hard to keep up a social life when you have to be in bed by 9pm. So I embraced this and took the pay cut well, I was still going to Seattle on Monday which made for a 8 to 9 hour day, and I was still going to Bend, 12 hour day. I was still making it.
In the last few months the owner, the top dog, the big cheese, called my boss and was wondering why I've been getting as many hours as the full time dudes. He told my boss to cut my hours and make the other dudes do what i was doing, so OK thats cool, now I had Monday and Tuesday off, sweet, less money, but more me time!
Last month it got crazier the dudes at the top where not happy with the Wine Salesman that works the Oregon Coast and fired him. For me that means that there is one less run, that means one less dude has to work on Wednesday that means ME! ugh! I've been getting this call the day be for too, so I'm usually anticipating waking up early and having a long drive to Bend and when I get the call I'm relieved but also really bummed. I mean my wife and i have a budget that only works if i make my quota every month so when I tell her I know it's just going to be a pain in our asses.
So, yeah low man on the totem pole, I get the table scraps. When it gets to busy I get the long hard routes, but when it isn't I get the simple short days. Oh well, i hope that the Coast run comes back and I get to work next Wednesday and keep up with our budget. May be I'll have a chance to work a concert or two this month! We'll see!
